Edible Book Day

  • Share:
Name: Edible Book Day
Date: March 21, 2022
Event Description:
Go on and play with your food! NOLS’ Edible Book Day calls on participants to create dishes that are true works of art related to or inspired by books. Submit photos of your creative edible art by March 28 to enter the fun competition offering a range of prizes. The International Edible Book Festival is an annual event uniting bibliophiles, book artists, and food lovers to celebrate the ingestion of culture. Participants create edible books that are exhibited, documented, and then consumed. Submissions must relate to a specific book, or to books in general, in either shape or content. Maybe your submission is a gingerbread house decorated to look like the residences in The House in the Cerulean Sea or Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Maybe it’s a meal inspired by a scene in Miss Eliza’s English Kitchen or The Coincidence of Coconut Cake. Maybe you take inspiration from a pun-able title like To kill a (Tequila) Mockingbird or Furiously Happy (Ha-pea). Maybe your entry is a cake, a masterpiece of decoration showing the Marauder’s Map in exquisite detail. From cake pops decorated like book characters to mocktails that capture the flavors of a tropical travelogue, set your creativity free in the kitchen. Prizes for First Place and Runner Up will be awarded in the categories of Best Pun, Best Technical Presentation, Best Book Representation, Judge’s Choice, and Kids 12 and under. Winners will get a $20 or $10 gift card from one of the following local retailers of their choice: Odyssey Bookshop; That Takes the Take; Buena Luz Bakery; Chinook Pharmacy; or Westend Taproom Tip & Sip. Celebrate your win by letting someone else do the cooking! Each entry is only eligible for one prize, but individuals may submit more than one entry. To submit your entry: 1. Create your masterpiece any time and take photos. (Then devour your creation!) 2. Between Monday, March 21 and Monday, March 28, submit: ? Your best 2-3 photos ? Specify if the artist is 12 years old or younger ? An optional descriptive paragraph* ? To EdibleBooks@nols.org *your description may include specific book details featured in your creation, major ingredients, and your inspiration. All entries will be shared to the NOLS Facebook and Instagram pages. First Place Winners and Runner Ups will be announced via the NOLS Facebook and Instagram pages on April 1. Entries will be scored by a team of staff and Library partners on imaginativeness and relevancy to a book, technical presentation, difficulty of execution, perceived edibility, and originality.
